Huge response from my first post, over the past few days I’ve been thinking what now?! What do I talk about..
Well here it goes! This week I decided to do an Intermittent Fast. There is so much research out there with advantages and disadvantages to doing a Fast, you have to do what is best for you! After listening to lessons on the 131 Method about the benefits of fasting; Improve overall Health, Lose body fat, Increase human growth hormone, Lower insulin levels and Promote programmed cell death (aka Autophagy) I thought why not try one and see how it goes!
My three day fast began on Monday, when first planning I decided on a modified One Meal a Day (OMAD) fast, unfortunately I did not prepare myself properly. This past weekend seemed like a free for all when it came to food with an anniversary party for my grandparents Sunday (cake, snacks, big steak dinner), popcorn at the movies, eating out on Saturday instead of cooking and the Dairy Free Ice Cream… mmm if you’re looking for a good substitute for ice cream please please please check out Presidents Choice Coconut Milk nice cream!!! Anyways.. I failed before I even started, but that stop me – I made a commitment to myself and if I can’t keep that commitment than who can I with?
I made the decision to change my 3 day fast from OMAD to eating within a 4 hour window.. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday looked like this:
- 8:00am: Bulletproof coffee (Black coffee, TBSP Grass-Fed Butter, MCT oil & splash of Almond Milk)
- 11:30am/12:00pm: 1 cup of Bone Broth (purchased from Bone 2 Broth – check them out! Both chicken & beef were delicious)
- 2:30pm – 6:30pm: Green Juice (1 cup water, Apple, 3 cups spinach, 1/2 cucumber, 3 drops Orange+, 3 drops Lemon+, 1 Celery stick, 2 TBSP Avocado Oil), Cashews & Pistachios, Carrots or Pepper and whatever Plant-Based meal I made that day!
Each day was a little bit different between 2:30 – 6:30pm
How did I feel during the fast? Monday was probably the toughest day for hunger! I was coming off a sugar high from cakes! (Yes I said plural amount of cake) but I found the Green Juice all 3 days really filled me up! I also noticed my appetite was more active in the afternoon than any other time of day. I felt satisfied after 6:30pm until 10pm when I went to bed. But throughout the 3 days I did feel a lack of energy! I am sure it was a combination of not going to bed early enough and not being in a fat burning mode prior to beginning this fast. I did not work out for the 3 days (oh! that’s a lie, there was a walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes while catching up with a friend), as many people know I love my workouts but I wanted to do this for my body and save my energy.
How do I feel now? Hit the gym this morning! (Yes I ate something before) I felt so energized and some kicked butt on chest & tri’s. Once home from the gym I had my protein shake, Ningxia shot, Celery juice and Hemp oats, so far at 9:30am I am feeling good, satisfied with my appetite and ready to take on the day. As for body fat, I don’t feel any less bloated..
Would I do it again? If I did do it again I would make sure to prepare my body in the correct way.
One key thing I forgot to mention… H20!!! Water is so important on any given day but during a fast it is even more important to stay hydrated. That is another portion where I feel I could have done better, I think I drank 3 sometimes 4 of my 473ml water bottle.
I believe there is always something to learn and during this fast I learned:
- Keep busy and your appetite won’t be taken over by the hunger emotion of ‘boredom’
- Prepare your body
- Drink more WATER!
- Be intuitive when eating
- You can do anything you put your mind to
Fasting is not for everyone, you need to listen to your body and do what is best for YOU!! I wanted to share my experience with you and show I am not perfect but I did the type of fast that felt best for me.. used my intutiion and ate when I was hungry.
That’s all for today! xo. Shan
